The history of our family traces back to Joseph Cobb who was born in 1840 and Jane Cobb who was born in 1846. Based on census records it is believed that they were born into slavery and met as children on a plantation in Nansemond County Virginia. Joseph and Jane were married and were blessed with six children, Edward (Ned) Cobb born in 1861, Joseph Cobb Jr. born in 1868, Laura (Annie) Cobb born in 1871, Peter Cobb born in 1873, Lewis Cobb born in 1875 and Adel (Addie) Cobb born in 1884. The children of Joseph and Jane Cobb were all born in Nansemond County, Virginia which today is known as Southampton County, Virginia.

Peter Cobb married Della Mira and they were blessed with eight children, Thomas Cobb born in 1903, Eddie Cobb born in 1904, Beulah Cobb born in 1905, William Cobb born in 1908, Hinton Cobb born in 1911, Carnell Cobb born in 1913 and Evorah (Rose) Cobb born in 1915.

Addie Cobb married James Banks and they were blessed with three children Elena (Eleanor) Banks born in 1902, James Banks Jr. born in 1909 and Mary Banks born in 1913.

This information was gathered from the U.S. census records. It’s our hope that we can continue to build our family history as we share the stories passed on to us by our parents, grandparents and great grandparents. 

This is only the first two known generations of our family. From these beginnings our family has grown and we have been blessed with a rich and proud family heritage; and throughout  the generations we continue to be a Family Rooted Together in Love.
